ABOUT:
Hello and welcome to my little piece of the internet! I’m Maddie Barry, an American illustrator, designer, and educator currently based on the East Coast. I graduated high school from Cab Calloway School of the Arts as a visual arts major in 2023 and I’m currently attending the Maryland Institute College of Art for my BFA in illustration with an estimated graduation of 2027.
As an artist, I’m currently interested in exploring themes of childhood, a mix of suburbia and natural life, exploration of the world, and urban legends/ modern folklore. I’m deeply invested and passionate about children’s media and challenging children with imagery and stories telling that will make them think and question the world, mixed in with humor and a sense of playfulness. I enjoy making characters that are unconventional and expressive. Characters that explore the world around them and make new discoveries, whether finding a ghost in a haunted painting down the hall, setting sail across sea, or starting a garage band with your neighbors. There is so much to find and explore in the world, and I want to take the things I discover into my illustrations.
Formally, I’m interested in exploring texture and found materials while combining traditional and digital media. My sketchbooks really help me explore and play with different materials I find in my day to day life, whether interesting scraps of papers I find on the streets of Baltimore or patterned paper I find in the library. I’ll often scan or simulate the textures and patterns I find for my sketchbook spreads in my finalized work. This process allows me to create designs and illustrations that blur the line between the digital screen and physical materiality of traditional artwork.
